A black student (his name was not mentioned) was carrying a glue gun for his art project, when someone saw him and rushed to call public safety officials. The caller reported that he had seen a "shirtless 6'2" black male" carrying what appeared to be a gun on the premises.
On May 1st night the Colgate University in upstate New York issued an alert about "an armed person" on campus. It was shut down for four hours. To aggravate the situation the college sent out a series of tweets about searching for the "alleged armed person" inside a building. Student s and their families were panicking.
And finally, the danger was eliminated. The dangerous criminal was caught. The law enforcement had identified the “armed shooter” as a student… With a glue gun… Preparing for his art project.
The University President Brian W. Casey issued a statement Tuesday calling for an investigation into the incident he described as a “profound error” and said there was "implicit racial bias."
“It is important that we understand the role that implicit racial bias had in the initial reporting of and responses to the events of (Monday) night,” the president said. “I want to make sure we speak with those who made and received the initial report to understand the role this played.”
Campus Safety Director Bill Ferguson, who was leading the university's security efforts Monday night, was asked to take an administrative leave pending a review of the events, according to Casey.
He said that the college was in touch with the student who was using the glue gun, as well as the student who reported him to law enforcement and the officials who made "essential administrative decisions" during the incident.
Can you believe it? It was a damned glue gun. I bet it was another dumb racist joke.
