Just recently a new report was issued by the University of Chicago’s crime lab. The report shows that though black people compose only one third of the city’s population, they become victims in 80% of murder cases.
Same study showed that 40 percent of all murder victims have more than 10 prior arrests.
The most commonly used for murder weapon is gun. 90% of homicides in Chicago involve a gun despite all the anti-Second Amendment laws. Just for comparison: only 58% of crimes in New York involve guns and in Los Angeles this figure is 72%.
According to the research a probable cause in this spike of crimes is police negligence. Since they shot Laquan McDonald armed only with a knife and all the protests which came after the killing, police decided to let things slide.
Street stops have fallen by an incredible 80 percent as police have become reticent to stop residents, and the rate of solved murders has also plunged to only 26%. With fewer stops and fewer criminals brought to justice, the streets full of criminals may be “fueling a cycle of retaliatory violence,” the study said. Only 5% of shootings were solved in 2016.
Crime rates are growing every year. So far 35 people were shot and killed in Chicago in January, 2017. During the first three weeks of January, a person is shot every two and one half hours, while someone has been killed every 14 hours.
